awd '88 transmission in a '90?

So my transmission is on its way out I thought I scored a deal but when I counted the spline it is a 21 tooth. I read as much as I could find on the subject and I think I confused myself. :lol: So can I use the 88 tranny that I have and just replace the flywheel and clutch? or will this not work? Thanks for any help
